Okay, I may have been a little harsh on NBC when they canceled (offhandedly, as it happens) “Ghost Hunters” last year, after ten years (and four seasons) and more than 200 episodes.

In truth, I couldn’t stand the show — not when it came to do actual ghost hunting, anyway. I’d been watching the show from day one, which had made it a pet project of mine since day one, and it had become cloying and self-congratulatory and full of non-paranormal excuses.

Canceling it made me furious — and I was silent for about two months, the period of time when it would’ve been nice to have a diversion.

Then I got another idea.

I’m going to produce a show.

Yeah, I knew it would take more than a little exposition. Still, this seemed like a neat idea.

If anyone can be good at explaining the paranormal, it’s me.

I stumbled on a potential host in another outtake I’d recorded from the “Ghost Hunters” set, a guy named Zak Bagans who seemed to have all the right qualifications: He was a regular on MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge,” he’d been a stripper for a time, and he seemed to have a wonderful sense of humor — which, it turned out, was so important.

He agreed, essentially, to be my partner, though, knowing his style, I wasn’t sure if he’d be up for the work. He didn’t know much about the paranormal, and he was already a show regular, but as it turned out, he had a knack for leading a group of investigators through a haunted house or scary environment.

It’d be so easy, I thought, to turn his abilities into an entire season.

Thus the birth of “Ghost Hunters Academy,” the first of my series of shows on the History Channel.
