With the advent of web-based applications, however, it has become difficult to maintain continuity between Web pages. This is because, with the proliferation of dynamic content, pages that were opened by links are often left with their initial window open after the newly opened Web page finishes loading, without the user’s involvement. Therefore, when a user opens a new Web page, the user is forced to close the window of the initial page and open a new window for the new page. As a result, the user is presented with a clean starting point without having to manually close the initial window. While this may be satisfactory for a small number of Web pages, this approach creates problems with complex Web pages where the user has a complex user interface such as a web form with multiple fields.
Another problem with the prior art is that it is difficult to restore a prior page to a certain point. For example, if a user opens a new Web page from within an existing page, the user’s previous location is usually lost. Therefore, after a user opens a new Web page, the user will be located on the new page where the new page was opened. For a complex Web page, it may be desirable to restore the user’s position in the new Web page to the specific point where the user previously was.
Accordingly, there is a need in the art for a technique that will allow the user to open a new Web page while maintaining continuity with the previous page. There is also a need in the art for a technique that will allow the user to restore the user’s position in the new page to the position
